Pre-anesthetic Considerations:
Gabapentin 10 mg/kg PO
Cerenia 2 mg/kg PO
*Please give both drugs 2-3 hours before surgery. These drugs will provide sedation for the placement of the catheter and prevent vomiting in the pre- and post-operative period.
Induction:
Methadone 0.25 mg/kg IV
Propofol 6 mg/kg IV (total dose)
*titrate to effect
Pre-oxygenate Cleo with 100% O2 with a face mask for 5 minutes before induction. This technique will prevent hypoxemia during intubation.
Anesthetic Maintenance: Isoflurane 1-1.5% or Sevoflurane 2-2.5%
Recommended Monitoring: Pulse oximetry, non-invasive blood pressure, ECG, capnography and temperature
Recommended Heat Support: Convective warming with forced air is the safest method for maintaining a normal body temperature in patients under anesthesia.
Fluid Therapy: Balanced crystalloid fluid at 3 mls/kg/hr
Locoregional Techniques: Lidocaine or bupivicaine 1 mg/kg (Total dose)
Post-operative Analgesia:
Buprenorphine 0.01 mg/kg IV
* Given that Cleo is a brachycephalic breed, pulse oximetry should be monitored continuously for 30-45 minutes post-extubation.
